30 July was the UN's World Day Against Trafficking in Persons.
Would every worker on your site be free to walk away?
It sounds obvious.
Unfortunately, it isn't always.
Official guidance lists warning signs including withheld wages or documents, excessive hours, restricted movement and dependence on an employer for transport or accommodation.
If you use subcontractors or labour providers, consider asking:
- Who actually pays the worker?
- Do they understand their pay and deductions?
- Can they speak to you without a supervisor present?
- Who holds their documents?
- Could they leave the job or accommodation freely?
A right-to-work check is not an exploitation check.
Quietly asking the right question may achieve more than another glossy modern-slavery statement.
